So thankful and a question for the mama's

Bean is finally starting to get back to herself after being sick for the last week and a half. I know that I am very blessed that she made it this far in life without being really sick but I have to say, that I am so thankful to have my baby back to her normal self. I was really starting to worry that all the fussiness was going to be part of her life now that she's not "officially" a baby anymore, but am thankful to say that my happy-go-lucky baby girl is back. I think one of the hardest things I've experienced so far as a mama is watching her be sick. I would much rather have it myself then watch her have to go through it. We made it though and I know this is a good experience because it's going to happen over and over again in her life and I need to be prepared. Now our attention is back to food! Bean is a very silly eater right now. One day she loves something, the next day she doesn't. It's a huge guessing game every time we sit down to eat. Luckily she'll eat any piece of fruit that you put in front of her so we have that to fall back on. Any advice from the mama's out there? Is there anything that your little one always liked to eat or any tricks at figuring out what's going to be the next favorite thing?

  1. When your baby looks at you with those sad eyes wanting you to take away the awfulness of being sick or in pain-- that is the most heartbreaking moment I have yet experienced as a mother. But I'm so glad she's turned the corner and is feeling better.

My little boy is just like Bean, he will eat any fruit, but it's a guessing game as to what else he'll take that day. We have a few staples-- mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, and jam sandwiches. Beyond that, I give him a divider plate with three options and figure that if he is actually hungry, he will eat at least one thing from his plate.

If he doesn't eat anything, I assume he wasn't that hungry (his daycare sometimes gives large snack portions in the afternoon)-- but I try to give him a small snack of crackers and milk before he goes to bed, just so he doesn't wake up starving.

Like I'm sure you've heard many times, it does often take several presentations before he will eat anything new. This past week I gave him green beans every day, the first day he was okay with them, then he wouldn't eat them again until yesterday (in any substantial amount).

For the most part, however, I'm right there with you-- I do not want to raise a picky eater, but some nights it's so much easier to just give him mac and cheese than try and experiment with new foods that he'll probably just throw to the dogs.

Okay, my comment is officially longer than your post :). Enjoy having your happy healthy baby back!!

  2. I hope the rain stops, and you're able to get outside now that Bean is feeling better!

The eating thing? It gets better! Keep trying. I know it can be frustrating!

  3. Popsicles never fail (low acid fruit only!). Or frozen blueberries. Salty things tend to be favored over sweet, unless it's supersweet like popsicles.

  4. Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'm trying really hard to just go with the flow and if there's something that she likes, I try to make sure she gets it. Right now we're in a noodle phase. We'll see how long that lasts :) I was really worried that if she wasn't eating, it might mean she wouldn't sleep well but that doesn't seem to be the case. At this point it seems like sleep is mostly related to other things, so I'm not being quite as concerned about it these days.
